Chapter News

October 2, 2006. Salesianum – Rome

“We are all in the Lord’s hands. Let us live our Chapter peacefully.

He will make himself manifest to us in His time”.

(Brother Pascual Piles)

The opening of the LXVI General Chapter took place at 9.30 am, with the Votive Eucharist of the Holy Spirit, presided by our Brother General, Pascual Piles. All the Capitular Brothers were present, as well as some of the Co-workers and assistants to the General Chapter, as well as a large number of Brothers from the Rome communities.

We asked the Holy Spirit to enlighten the deliberations and conclusions of this important international meeting of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God.

At 11.00 am the Opening Session began, and, after a short prayer, the Brother General gave a heartfelt speech in which he spoke about the “Passion for the Hospitality of Saint John of God in the World Today” (the General Chapter’s motto), the most important issues of the past six years, the service of animation and government under the pontificates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, as well as the plans and challenges of the future of the Order.

After the Brother General’s opening address, the Brothers of the Rome communities left the Capitular Room and work continued with the roll call to assess whether all the Capitular Brothers were present. Brother Wolfgang Mösslacher of the Austrian Province was unable to be present because of health problems and was replaced by his first substitute, Brother Pius Volk.

Brother Gian Carlo Lapic, a priest from the Lombardo-Veneta Province of Croatian birth, was unanimously appointed as Secretary for the General Chapter.

The two scrutineers, in charge of assessing the validity of all of the Chapter’s voting processes were also named: they are the eldest of the Brothers, Bro. Adalbert Málek, of the Bohemo-Moravian Province, and the youngest, Bro. Gustavo Mucchiutti, of the Southern South American Province.

The methodology and schedule for the entire Chapter were presented by the Moderator, Dr. Álvaro Díaz, a psychologist from Colombia who works for SELARE. The Moderator also mentioned the Co-workers who will take part in the Chapter (the full participants’ list is on our Web Page).

Following the lunch break, and a prayer pronounced by Brother Elia Tripaldi of the Roman Province, the Brother General started to illustrate the Report of the 2000-2006 Six-Year Period, subdivided into the following Sections: Life of the Brothers, Government and Animation of the Order and Brotherly Life. Then, Brother Luis M. Aldana, one of the General Councilors, moved on to illustrate the issues he was in charge of, namely, The Pastoral Care of Vocations and Formation.

After that, the participants split up into language groups (1 Italian, 1 French, 2 English, 1 Polish, 1 German and 2 Spanish groups) to reflect upon the issues mentioned by the Brother General and by Brother Luis M. Aldana. The groups named four Committees for the Chapter: Central Committee, Liturgy Committee, Relations and Communications Committee, and Recreation Committee. The very full first day concluded with Vespers.

The Relations and Communications Committee will update information on the Chapter daily on this web page.

Tuesday, 3 October 2006, Salesianum, Rome

“Let us look to the future with hope. Let us thank God for all that we have accomplished.”

(Brother Pascual Piles)

Today the General Chapter completed the first phase of its work: by the end of the day it had received reports from the members of the General Government of the Order who were responsible for the following areas of the life of the Order for the last six years: Charismatic Management (Bro. General), Pastoral Care of the Sick (Bro. General), Bioethics (Bro. General), Co-Workers (Bro. Donatus Forkan), Missions (Bro. Donatus Forkan), The Postulation General (Bro. Félix Lizaso), the General Secretariat (Bro. José Luis Muñoz), the Bursar General (Bro. Emerich Steigerwald) and the Tiber Island Hospital (Bro. Pietro Cicinelli). The reports were highly informative and detailed. Brother Victor Martín Martínez presented the capitulars with a copy of a new illustrated publication “The Art and Culture of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God.

At midday the capitulars assembled in the chapel to celebrate the Eucharistic Liturgy with Cardinal Franc Rode, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of the Consecrated Life and Societies of the Apostolic Life. In his homily on the gospel reading of the parable of the Good Samaritan the Cardinal pointed out that the charitable and compassionate love that the Good Samaritan had shown the wounded wayfarer was a type of sacrament that each one of us can bestow on his or her suffering neighbour when we come to their aid in need.

4 October 2006

“With fantasy and passion for the Hospitality of St. John of God”.

(Homily of H. E. Card. Fiorenzo Angelini)

On 4 October 2006, the Chapter started its work at 8:30 a.m. with language groups, which commented on and discussed the reports presented by the General Government on the previous day.  At 9:30 the Capitulars met in plenary, where the assembly was introduced by the Provincial of the Austrian Province, Brother Paulus Kohler, with a brief meditation. After that, Prof. Mion sdb from the Salesian Pontifical University presented a report on the survey concerning the state of formation in the Order and stressed the main points in a short summary. At the end of his presentation, the members of the Chapter had the opportunity to ask questions. At 12:00 p.m. His Eminence Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini celebrated the Eucharist in the Chapter Hall. Cardinal Angelini has just celebrated his ninetieth birthday, and has been involved in the episcopal ministry for the past 50 years. The members of the Chapter reconvened at 3:30 p.m. with a meditation by Brother Rudolf Knopp from the Bavarian Province. The Chapter Secretary then read the minutes from the previous day´s sessions, after which the working groups met once again and presented their conclusions in the plenary assembly that followed. After dinner, Brother Thadu Kang made a presentation to the Capitulars on the new Hospice in China, while the Well’being Commission organized a soccer match.

5 October 2006

“Witnesses of a joyful and fruitful religious life in hospitality”

The day began with the Eucharist presided over by Brother Fintan BRENNAN-WHITMORE, Provincial of Ireland.

At 9:30 a.m. the capitulars heard a presentation by Mr. Salvino Leone, Doctor and Theologian who has worked for many years with the Roman Province. He introduced the working focuments for the Chapter, the “Instrumentum Laboris”.  As the name suggests, it is a document for reflection meant to facilitate our study and discussion on specific points related to the life of the Order.  The sources of inspiration are: Holy Scriptures, the Magisterium of the Church, the Biography by Castro, the letters of Saint John of God, the Charter of Hospitality, the Constitutions and GeneralStatutes.

The document was drafted by a preparatory commission of brothers and coworkers, and provides an overview of the present situation in the Order.

The working document is divided into four parts:

1. Life of the brothers

2. Mission of the Order

3. Collaboration - Networking

4. Legal aspects.

Today the language groups were asked to reflect on the first part: the life of the Brothers:

Pastoral ministry of vocations promotion

Initial and ongoing formation

Fraternal life and new forms of community.

The day ended with a visit to the Community of Tiber Island Hospital, where we celebrated Vespers and shared a meal.

Friday, October 6th – Salesianum - Rome

After the Lauds in the language groups and breakfast, the Chapter resumed its work at about 8:45 am.  In the plenary session, the secretaries of the 8 language groups reported on the conclusions of yesterday s discussion on the themes of the life of brothers.  The floor was then opened for questions, reactions and comments on the vocations pastoral ministry, ongoing formation, the new forms of community.etc.

At 12:15 we celebrated the Eucharist, which was presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Javier Lozano, President of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care, who focused his homily on health care.

The afternoon session opened with the reading and approval of the minutes of the previous day, followed by work in continental groups: Australasia, Africa, Americas and Europe.  In the case of continents with a greater linguistic variety, the work of the brothers was facilitated by interpreters.  During the session, each brother received a copy of the conclusion of the regional meetings which took place in each continent in early 2006.

At 5:45 pm the Chapter met in plenary to share the conclusions of each group, with the help of the Moderator, Dr. Alvaro Diaz.

The day ended with a soccer match, with the participation of about twelve brothers and coworkers.  At 8:30 pm, after dinner the Province of Andalusia presented a summary of its centers, focusing especially on its modern Saint John of God Hospital in Aljarafe, which was inaugurated in 2003 and operates in an area near Seville with a population of 300,000.

                                                      7 October 2006

“I must tell you that I have been getting on very well with the Rosary, and I hope in God that I shall recite it as often as I can and as he wishes”.

(Saint John of God, LB 17)

The work began at 9:30 am with a plenary session for the reading and approval of the minutes of the previous day.  This was followed by language groups to develop proposals after the analysis of the first section of the Instrumentum Laboris, devoted to the life of the brothers.  The plenary session was reconvened at 11:00 am for the presentation of the proposals developed by the language groups.

Before the end of the session, brother Giuseppe Magliozzi read a short reflection on the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was instituted by Saint Pius V to thank the Virgin Mary for her intercession in the battle of Lepanto, which enabled them to defeat the Turks on 7 October 1571.  During that battle, eight brothers of Saint John of God assisted the warriors as  nurses, led by Brother Pedro Soriano, as a result of which, our religious family gained pontifical approval.  In keeping with the Marian liturgical feast, the agenda of the General Chapter has scheduled a pilgrimage to the shrine of our Lady of the Good Counsel in the afternoon.  Brother Magliozzi refers to the fact that our well-known dentist, Brother Giovanni Battista Orsenigo (1837-1904), was a very zealous propagator of the devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel, and that the Brother’s biography is available in Italian on the  web site .

In the afternoon, two buses took the Capitulars to the shrine in genazzano, where at 4:00 pm the Concelebration at the altar of the Virgin Mary was presided over by Brother Elia Tripaldi.  In the homily, he reminded us that the Mother of Good Counsel is also the Mother of Hospitality, service and full availability, and that we turn to her so that She may help us serve Her son Jesus Christ, who is present in the poor and sick.

After the celebration, the Capitulars visited the Museum, at the entrance of which a plaque was placed on 20 May to commemorate Brother Orsenigo.  The plaque is meant to pay tribute to the Brother’s commitment to have Leo XIII introduce the invocation of the Lady of Good Counsel in the Lauretanian Litanies.  Before returning to Rome, the Capitulars dined in Grottaferrata, upon the invitation of the Roman Province.

October 9th, 2006 – Salesianum - Rome

“A specific formation of the heart is necessary for the charismatic management of our Centers and Apostolic Works”(Instrumentum Laboris)

There were no General Chapter working sessions on Sunday, October 8th. The Brothers either rested, went on an excursion or visited Rome, after the Eucharist celebrated by the Father General of the Salesians, Pascual Chávez. In his homily he spoke to us of the symbiosis between consecrated life and the Eucharist and the importance of the Good Samaritan’s mission.

In plenary, in the presence of the 21 Co-workers from different Provinces, who joined the General Chapter today, we began studying the theme of charismatic management in language groups, with a view to the future. It is an exciting theme that Brothers and Co-workers alike consider of capital importance.

At the end of the afternoon, the Provinces of Aragon and Central America presented several videos about their mission and evangelization in Spain, Mexico and Cuba, as well as the new Psychiatric Center of San Pedro de Sula in Honduras.

Tuesday, 10 October 2006, Salesianum, Rome

The Order being present in many countries … the incorporation and inculturation of our charism into other cultures and religious traditions is both a challenge and an opportunity for the Order.

(Instrumentum Laboris 2.19)

The morning and afternoon sessions of the Chapter begin with a prayer that is arranged in turn by the respective Provinces. The prayer is usually accompanied by an audio-visual presentation to aid reflection on the theme. This prayer in the morning was in the hands of the Irish Province and in the afternoon it was the responsibility of the Canadian General Delegation.

The Chapter today continued working on the Mission section of the working document (or Instrumentum Laboris) of the Chapter. Each group was asked to make approximately proposals to be taken into account in planning the greater integration of Brothers and Co-workers in the mission of the Order and the transmission of the values of the Order.

The 21 Co-workers members of the Chapter withdrew from the language groups for a period of time in order to be able to meet as a distinct group and agree on a declaration that would be made by the Co-workers to the Chapter.

At the afternoon session the President of the Chapter, Brother Pascual Piles Ferrando, informed the Chapter that the Order’s internet website had received more than 23 thousand hits in the last month – greatly increasing since the commencement of the Chapter.

After the language group reports, discussions continue by region.

At 3.30pm the regional groups continue their discussions and at 5pm, after a prayer led by Br Stephen de la Rosa, Provincial of the U.S.A., the Chapter secretary presents the previous day’s minutes.  Each group then reports on the rich and fruitful discussions of the day.  The Brothers are then invited to proceed to Villa San Pietro, where they will have vespers and share a meal with the local community.

It was for this very reason  that within the Religious Order that has made hospitality its specific charism, the dimension of service becomes absolutely essential and expresses the very raison d'être of the works of the Order and the interior attitude of its most committed Co-workers.” (Charter of Hospitality,7.3.1.)

Today the Chapter turned its attention to some proposals that were placed before it that would have changed certain aspects of the Order’s own law. The proposals had been included in the Working Document of the Chapter. They were further explained by the Secretary General, Brother José Luis Muñoz. The capitulars then went into their respective language groups to discuss the merits – or otherwise – of the proposals. They then returned to the Chapter Room and voted on them.

At noon the capitulars remained in the Chapter room where the Superior General of the Camillians, Rev. Frank Monks, celebrated Mass. In his remarks Father Monks spoke to the capitulars of the close connection between the Order and the Camillians. He paid a tribute to the pioneering work done by the Order in involving lay persons in the healing mission of the Church. He also spoke of the need of the contemporary world for the charism of hospitality which is a response to the prevailing hostility to be found between peoples, faiths and nations.

After the luncheon break the Chapter received Brother Fiorenzo Priuli of the Lombardy-Venice Province. Brother Fiorenzo is a surgeon who works in Africa at the Order’s hospital in Togo and Benin. He had come to Italy to address a congress of surgeons on  the topic of surgery in developing countries. He presented a report on his work in Africa to the Chapter.

The president thanks the English Province for the book celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Brother’s presence in England, and the Roman Province for the CD with the photos of the evening with the Community of the Villa San Pietro.

Bro. José Maria Bermejo de Frutos, Provincial of Castilla, presented the book on « Process of Beatification of Saiint John of God ». 20 October 2006 - Salesian Fathers' Hospitality House, Rome

"Consecrated men and women of today have the duty to be witnesses of the transfiguring presence of God in a world that is evermore disoriented and confused, a world where toning down has substituted sharp and distinctive colours."

("Benedict XVI, 22 May 2006)

Each of the Language Groups Celebrated Mass before reconvening in plenary  at 9.30 a.m. to examine the provisional formulation of the objectives that the Order intends to attain during the coming Sexennium. They were drawn up by the Drafting Committee, based on both the Instrumentum Laboris and comments and proposals presented over the previous days by the Language Groups and the Regional Groups.

The Group work finished at 11 a.m. and the plenary began at 11.30 with an introductory  prayer by Brother Yanka Sharma, the Vocal from the Indian Province, emphasising the need to focus our Community Life around Christ. This was followed by the reading and adoption of the minutes of the previous sessions. The plenary session continued until lunch, when the final proposals drafted by the four Language Groups were read out and debated in the Hall.

At 3.30 p.m., after prayers led by Bro. Léopold Gnami, the final proposals drawn up by the other three Language Groups were read out and discussed. By show of hands, the Vocals moved that the Drafting Committee should meet later in the day, and drawing on the outputs of the seven Language Groups and the other input from the debate in Plenary, it should draft the final text of the Guidelines to steer the work of Order over the coming Sexennium, which would be read out and appraised at the final Plenary session on 21 October.

Closure of Chapter

"We must keep one hand on the Bible and the other on the daily newspaper if we want to carry the good news out to the world in a language it can understand"

(cf Bro. Donatus Forkan, Superior General, closing address)

October 21st was a day of particular significance to the Capitulars because it was the last day of Chapter.

Chapter convened at 8:45 in the Chapter Hall, where the Brother General took the floor and recalled that it was Saturday, the day traditionally devoted to our Lady, and said that his Generalate would be placed under her protection.

The minutes of the meetings held on the 19th and 20th were then read and approved, and two Brothers were asked to control the minutes of that day's meeting on behalf of everyone, because it was obviously not possible to adopt it in Plenary.

Brother victor Martín, speaking on behalf of the Drafting Commission, then read out (in Spanish, with simultaneous translation) the corrected version of the proposals that had been drafted and completed over the past few days: there were 57 proposals in all, covering various areas of the Order: the Life of the Brothers, the Mission of the Order, Co-working (Networking), and Legal Matters.

A number of short interventions followed regarding the document submitted, and compliments were paid to the Drafting Commission on its fine work. The President put the proposals as a whole to the vote, and they were carried to general applause.

After a short break work resumed and the Moderator announced the results of the Chapter evaluation that had been requested the day before, followed by the closing address given by the Superior General, Brother Donatus Forkan.

In his address, among other things, the Prior General said that we had lived through a Pentecostal experience, and affectionately greeted the outgoing Superior General, Brother Pascual Piles, for his invaluable, insightful and passionate contribution to the Order; he thanked the outgoing Councillors and said that he had experienced his election with surprising interior peace, while recognising that the Order was faced with an arduous task in this difficult age. Brother Donatus said that he would devote himself totally to his ministry, with great hope and with some dreams, with the certainty that Our Lord would help him; he would work collegially with his Councillors and with the Provincials, acknowledging the need for all of us to be more committed to providing formation for the Co-workers, in the knowledge that the Laity have also received the call to do good and to practise Hospitality in the manner of St John of God. In conclusion, he thanked all the people and groups who had worked to ensure a successful Chapter, placing himself at the disposal of the Brothers and the sick.

At 11:30 the Capitulars left in two coaches for the General Curia to celebrate Mass and to have a festive meal to celebrate the name day of the Superior General (one day early). Brother Pascual Piles presided at the Eucharist, celebrating the Solemnity of the Patronage of Our Lady. After lunch, some of the Capitulars left to return home.
